Graded bed load transport in sediment supply limited channels under unsteady flow hydrographs

چکیده

Natural river channels that are sediment supply limited due to upstream water management practices and/or flow regulation often subject in-channel bed degradation and surface restructuring during natural flood hydrographs or controlled releases from dams. The heterogeneity of sizes present in these means different size classes transported more actively parts the hydrograph. A series laboratory experiments is conducted investigate response a graded range design when no supplied at boundary. results show varying temporal lag load transport hysteresis for fractions, defined by fine, medium coarse mixture. class typically exhibits clockwise hysteresis, indicating active rising hydrograph limb, whereas fine demonstrates either no/mixed counterclockwise as it becomes falling limb. On this separate limb basis, predictions fractional rates improved calculating unique reference threshold shear stresses each initiation cessation grain motions on limbs, respectively. Corresponding variations median vary depending total work unsteadiness, with peak values generally attained overall fining observed Analysis three also indicates medium-coarse fractions larger relative proportions smaller magnitude, flashy flatter hydrographs, resulting armouring post-hydrograph layer most significant end channel decreases exponentially downstream direction. Two empirical models, based combined descriptors, shown predict reasonably well yields generated under satisfactory collapse current experimental data previous datasets both uniform sediments. These provide an describe extent after passage individual hydrographs.

Sediment Transport in Unsteady Flow Conditions

Sediment transport under unsteady flow condition is studied experimentally. In the first step, sediment transport under different steady flow conditions was measured and an empirical equation was derived for its calculation. In the next step, two continuous and three stepwise hydrographs were generated in the flume, and their sediment transport rate was measured. The continuous hydrographs were...

Calculating bed load transport in steep boulder bed channels

[1] Steep, rough channels occupy a large fraction of the total channel length in mountainous regions. Most sediment mobilized on hillslopes must pass through these streams before reaching lower-gradient channels. Steep channels have wide grain size distributions that are composed of finer, more mobile sediment and large, rarely mobile grains. The large grains can bear a significant portion of t...

Impulse Framework for Unsteady Flows Reveals Superdiffusive Bed Load Transport

Sediment transport is an intrinsically stochastic process, and measurement of bed load in the environment is further complicated by the unsteady nature of river flooding. Here we present a methodology for analyzing sediment tracer data with unsteady forcing. We define a dimensionless impulse by integrating the cumulative excess shear velocity for the duration of measurement, normalized by grain...

A simple model of unsteady sheet-flow sediment transport

A simple, quasi-steady, one-dimensional, vertical (1DV) model of unsteady sheet flow is presented. The central aim is to provide greater realism in the near-bed, high-concentration layer, than is possible using models based on the classical referenceconcentration approach. This is achieved by tracking erosion and deposition at the bottom of the mobile sediment layer in relation to the amount of...

Sediment transport-storage relations for degrading, gravel bed channels

[1] In a drainage network, sediment is transferred through a series of channel/valley segments (natural sediment storage reservoirs) that are distinguished from their neighbors by their particular capacity to store and transport sediment. We propose that the sediment transport capacity of each reservoir is a unique positive function of storage volume, which influences sediment mobility and avai...
